Nokko quietly read the EHCI report on his phone as he pretended to study for his pre-Calculus exam as he ate his second Kirkland granola bar for a snack that afternoon. He sipped his tea, still a bit hot. Nokko debated whether he should get a bag of chips from the kitchen. He decided against it; his mother was pissed enough at him as he was for being only slightly overweight. Nokko looked down at the bubble of fat that had formed at his abdomen. Perhaps he should go on a diet, but Nokko admitted to himself that he would just cheat on his diet. So he went down to the kitchen anc got the bag of chips he had denied himself 3 minutes before.
He was weak in front of food, Nokko admitted; but he had to be somewhere. His life wasn't great: he lived with a single mother in a shitty school. His mother forced him to get good grades so that he didn't end up like her. Nokko looked at his Math again; he hated Math; and Math had always hated Nokko. He probably needed to study, but he found greater solace in eating and reading reports about European medical care.
The only reason Nokko was bothering to look this up was because his one of his classmates wanted evidence for the success of the copay model for medical care. Places like the Netherlands, Germany, and other excellent EU systems all used the copay system, it seemed. Nokko laughed to himself. His friends were smart, but misinformed, as usual.
Nokko heard his mother approach and quickly hid his phone in his coat, which he deliberately bought a size too large. His mother dumped the dirty laundry Nokko had in his room and asked, "So how's the studying?" Nokko hated this question. How was he supposed to know whether he was learning the information? "I mean, I'm getting the problems I do right mostly; and when I don't, it's because I've made a careless error."
It was then that Nokko's mother noticed the bag of chips, "What are those?" Nokko froze, "I'm sorry, Mom. I should have checked with you first, my fault." Nokko felt a pang of regret: he hated being decptive; but he was hungry and hoped his mother wouldn't notice. "You know my rule: one snack. It's ok but no more, okay?" Nokko blushed that his mother was patronizing him, but he nodded and went back to "work."
Dinner passed without incident. Nokko's mother usually made dinner and went to eat in the front of the TV, so Nokko sat in the kitchen and snuck enough food to satisfy himself, leaving enough so that his mother wasn't suspicious. When he wanted enough food that it was noticeable, he just asked; and his mother usually just obliged him. 'This is why I'm fat,' Nokko thought to himself and laughed.
