Cassie decided to begin by taking control of the two people that she knew best - her mother, Julia Anne Nomura, and her little sister, Hilda Jean Nomura.
Julia was 42 years old, and worked as a sales manager for a local restaurant supply company. Cassie's father had died when Hilda was still a toddler. Julia had never remarried, and - at least as far as Cassie knew - had never even dated.
Hilda was 12 years old and in the seventh grade. She was a cheerful, outgoing girl with loads of friends. She ws also very intelligent and was a good student.
Cassie believed that it was best to begin with two people close to her whose habits she knew quite well. However, before she took control of them, she had some additional work to do on herself.
For the next three days, she went to work as usual, doing her job and bantering with her co-workers. No one suspected that anything about her was different. But unbeknownst to anyone but herself, all the food that she ate served as raw material for the nanites, converting more and more of her bpdy from flesh to machine.
When she went home at night, she consumed all the food in her apartment, but she also ate all the packaging as well. Enough of her body's systems had been converted that she no longer had to limit herself to things that were edible by humans. Once she had consumed everything that she considered disposable in her apartment, she began drawing electricity directly from the electrical outlets.
By the time she got home from work on Friday evening, while she still looked human on the outside, she was now ninety percent machine. She ws ready to absorb her mother and sister. One decision remained. Should she take cotrol of them over the phone using modulated signals - in much the way that the virus had taken control of her - or should she do it in person?
