Chapter #22

Method Acting

by: rugal b. Author IconMail Icon
You do think that it's probably best to rip the band-aid off and hang out with Michelle's friends but before you can even turn the key to start the car, you get second thoughts. You think that you could pull it off because you seemed to be doing well with Cindy yesterday but that was just for a brief spell. This would likely be for longer; lunch and then them probably wanting to hang out further. What if you do something that makes them suspicious or worse, what if a similar incident from the one with Cindy occurs? If the real Michelle messages them or worse, shows up, then you'd be in big trouble. Because this wouldn't be simply a single person but a group of eleventh grade AP girls.

Things have already spiraled enough as is and everything would go into freefall if you and the masks were exposed to a large group like that. Plus, beyond wanting to see how things are coming along with Caleb you think it'd be a good idea to show him that the swap went off without a hitch and talk to him a bit since maybe that'll fix the bad mood he's in. You don't want to distrust him but can't help but feel a small bit of worry that maybe he'd try and mess things up because of his dislike of this plan.

So you take Michelle's phone out of the her purse and open it up to a group chat with her friends: a group of junior girls who are mostly in the AP clique and the upper tier of popularity. A voice in the back of your head insists that they're actually nice girls, not mean bitches like Kelsey or Chelsea. Sorry. Family stuff came up and I can't make it, you send. You receive a barrage of disappointed messages and sad emojis in response.

You finally start the car and back out of the driveway, driving through town until you reach the old elementary school and it's there that you hit a snag. The door to the basement is locked and of course you don't have the key. It's with Michelle on your keyring so you obviously have no way of getting it without meeting with her, and that's something that you don't think that you should do. The only bit of relief you have is that there's no way that Michelle would know what the key is for. So you take out your phone (much easier to think of it that way) and are ready to contact Caleb when another worry hits you: you can't remember his number.

You try and you try but it's just not coming to you and you almost want to smack yourself in frustration. You're so used to simply selecting his name in your contact list that you've never really needed to know his number. You need to see if he's down in the basement so you knock on the door, then knock again when you get no response and finally bang on it. But still there's nothing but silence so you wonder if he's maybe still at home instead. Thankfully you at least remember where he lives so you're able to drive to his place. When you ring the door, it's a moment before it opens to reveal his mother.

Ms. Johansson answers the door and for a second you're take aback. You've always thought that she's a reasonably attractive woman, even if her age is beginning to show with a few fine lines here and there. But she's a working single mother and when you hang out with Caleb it's often at your place or somewhere else so you tend not to see her as much as one would expect. You've also joked with Keith before that Caleb probably got his looks from his dad because they sure didn't come from her. That ended when Keith, in his typical manner, expressed what he thought about your mother and you resolved to never again bring up the topic of MILFs around him.

"Hi there. Can I help you?" asks Caleb's mother.

"Oh, um, yes. Is Caleb here?" you nervously ask.

A suspicious look comes across her face. "He is, yes. Are you a friend of his?"

"Yes ma'am, or at least we're getting there, I hope," you answer with the type of midwestern politeness that Michelle was raised in. You quickly begin spinning up a story. "He, uh, started tutoring me with some classes I was having trouble with and we were supposed to get together today for a study session. But silly me, I never actually asked him for his number. I remember him telling me where lived though."

"I see. Well, he's still in his room I think so if you want to come in I can—"

"Oh, no ma'am. That wouldn't be... uh... we were just going to go somewhere like the library." Michelle isn't quite the god-fearing girl that she was as a kid but she still attends church every Sunday (she'd just gotten home when Yumi contacted her) and so you're able to draw up on that to put forth the obvious implication.

Caleb's mother looks amused but gives an understanding nod. "Caleb!" she calls out as she turns back towards the inside of the house, "You have someone here to see you!" There's no response so she shakes her head and marches back inside. She returns a moment later. "It might be a few minutes. You can have a seat if you want," she states as she invites you in. "What did you say your name was?"

"Michelle," you state as you walk by her.

"And you share some classes with Caleb?"

"Oh, no actually," you answer as you take a seat. "But some of my friends on the cheerleading squad know him and said I should talk to him since I was having trouble with some of my classes."

"Ah, a cheerleader, huh?"

"Yes ma'am, just like at my old school. I moved here right before the school year started so I'm still adjusting and that's throwing my grades off."

Caleb's mother continues to appraise you with amused curiosity when Caleb finally appears. He double takes when he sees you.

"Uh, hey Michelle," he says warily.

"Caleb, hi! I just came over because we were supposed to go out to the library for a study session, remember? Do you have your stuff?" You raise your eyebrows as you ask that in a way that indicates he better know what the "stuff" is.

"Yeah, just let me grab it. I'll be right back." He runs off but is back in after another couple minutes with a backpack. "Alright, I'm ready," he says and then turns to his mother. "I'll be back for dinner."

"Oh that's fine dear, there's no rush. If the two of you want to grab something to eat the don't let me stop you."

Caleb rolls his eyes as he walks past you. You follow him out to your car. "Great, now my mom thinks I have a girlfriend," he mutters as he heads around the the passenger side. You can only giggle in response.

* * * * *

"So, did you wear the Jenny mask last night?" you ask as you watch Caleb prep ingredients on the sigil. You'd decided to see if those spells you copied yesterday will still work so after grabbing Caleb you'd gone around buying ingredients. Thankfully Michelle has a part-time job she works (you'll actually have to go there tonight) so you have the money for material.

"Yeah, I guess," he says unenthusiastically.

"You guess?"

"Okay, yeah, I did. Why?"

"Well?"

"Well what?"

You huff and roll your eyes. "What's your problem? Are you still mad about me agreeing to help Cindy and Yumi?" you ask. "Because it's fine. Look at me, I'm a cheerleader. I've got Michelle's looks and her brains and everything."

"Yeah, good for you, 'cause I sure didn't get that," Caleb replies. "I put the mask on and yeah I got to see Jenny naked and touch her tits and that was nice but I couldn't do anything else because I didn't have her brain. So when I tried, y'know, it was awkward because I didn't know what I was doing."

"That doesn't make sense. I had everything immediately."

"Well I didn't, okay?" he responds. "I feel asleep in the mask though and I think I had it all when I woke up but that's around when you came over."

So that's why he took so long coming out of his room. "Okay, well, just take the mask again and use it when you get home. Then you'll have all night to make Jenny cum."

"Whatever, just let me do this," he says as he turns back to the paper for the first spell.

So you leave him alone as you slip Michelle's persona back on... but it's more like it's mingled with your own personality. Because you look at the lump of dirt shoved in the corner of the basement with purple flames dancing on it and know that it's for something related to the book. You'd watched Caleb, after arriving in the basement, pile it on top of the book and put the fuel on, then toss a match on it. So you, both Will and Michelle, are curious about what the end result will be.

"This is all pretty freaky," you find yourself thinking in Michelle's voice. " Sure, I could become someone prettier or more popular or mess things up for someone who deserves it. But it's scary to think about too, being a high schooler and having access to so much power. It'd be very easy for things to go wrong."

Your thoughts are cut off by a horrible odor and smoke and you rush to open the door and let it out. But when it's all clear you and Caleb look in amazement: a mask is sitting on the paper. "It actually worked!" you say in amazement. "Hey, you know what this means right? You've got a blank you can use again."

"Yeah, I guess so. Don't know how I'd get someone then."

Even with this he still sounds disappointed. "Well let me take it, I can try for another cheerleader or one of my friends. If you're fine with eleventh graders."

He's quiet.

"Don't be so down on yourself," you say as you walk up behind him, place your hands on his shoulders and begin kneading.

"What are you—"

"You're not as good looking as that guy Yumi introduced me to earlier but you're smart, and funny and hard working. And that's plenty attractive or at least I think it is." You then turn him around so he's facing towards you, lean in, and give him a quick peck on the lips.

"Will—!?"

"Michelle," you correct him. "I'm Michelle, remember?"

Yeah, you're Michelle Estrich and you kind of want this since you haven't felt a boy's touch since one of those last nights in Iowa with your now ex. But there's a voice in the back of your head screaming at you to stop.
