Chapter #37

The Rest, if Not the Best

by: rugal b. Author IconMail Icon
"Random, huh?" you muse out loud.

"Right," Sydney replies, though you weren't necessarily directing it at her. "Well, okay, maybe not random random but more playing it by ear?"

"Playing it by ear how?"

"I dunno," she answers. "But like we've just been talking about specific groups -- cheerleaders or this or that sports team or whatever -- that maybe we can think a little more broadly?"

"Sure," you say though the vagueness of that statement means you're not quite following her.

Sydney must pick up on that because she sits back in her seat and looks somewhat serious; as if she's mulling it over too. "Okay, so, like I said I've got some sophomores in one of my classes... well, actually, not just that class but say we make our coven out of sophomores. Or groups of three from each of the freshmen, sophomores and juniors, or just whoever from the underclassmen."

"So that's what you want to do?" you ask.

"Is that what you want to do?" Sydney retorts, flipping the question back on you. "I'm just spitballing here, it doesn't have to be underclassmen. I mean, there's a whole school right? Like the whole of the female population doesn't begin and end with Chelsea or Catherine."

"Like... hmm... Victoria Rodriguez?"

"Yes!" Sydney exclaims excitedly. "Victoria... I mean I don't really know her but I know of her and... she's got her own group of friends right? Like there's this whole level of girls who are higher up but not really at that Chelsea or Catherine level and Victoria kind of seems to be the top dog there doesn't she?"

You have to admit that you don't really know if she is or not. You do know that she's a latina with a pretty face and shaped well with curves and meat distributed in a way that's almost like a visual feast. You also know what you've seen her with plenty of other girls and in the company of a guy from... you want to say the baseball team.

"Well, sure," you say. "They're like... second-tier?"

"Right! They're definitely not unpopular, although..." Sydney trails off and out of the corner of your eye you think you catch sight of a grin spreading on her face. "What about the girls that are? The ones that are lower rungs of the social ladder I mean?"

"What about them?"

"I mean when you think of people who'd want to be witches then it'd probably be girls like that, right?" asks Sydney. "Girls who'd want to use it to make themselves beautiful or make the hunky guy out of their league fall for them. Even to get back at the popular types who shun and belittle them."

"You'd want to make a coven of unpopular girls?" you ask as you pull up to a red light. You've tried keeping your own issues with your unpopularity away from her but you're wondering if she's seeing right through you.

"Like I said, Will, I'm just spitballing."

You feel like you want to say something else but are interrupted by some loud whooping from the car that pulls up in the lane next to you. You look over to see two guys and two girls maybe around your age. The guys look like jocks and seem to be on the rowdier side. A large letterman jacket is on one of the girls... maybe the girlfriend of one of the jockish looking guys wearing his?

"Ugh," Sydney rolls her eyes. "Meatheads like that can be such a pain in the ass to deal with. Thank god I don't think I've seen them around school."

"I don't think they go to our school," you point out. "That jacket on one of the girls is Eastman's colors so they probably go there."

At that Sydney's face lights up. "Eastman, huh? I know a few girls that go there actually." She smiles at you but you quickly have to turn away as the light turns green. "What about doing that? A coven of Eastman girls."

"And leave Westside behind?" you ask. "I mean, I don't really know that school or anything."

"Well we could do that or take a few Eastman girls and a few Westside girls. Make this coven an interschool deal." You again notice Sydney lean back in her seat. "But I guess I said random, huh? So why even think of it like that. We could just grab whoever from school or, I don't know, wherever. Don't even think about it I guess."

But despite that it does make you want to think. "What's that supposed to mean?" you ask.

But Sydney shrugs. "I don't really know. Cheerleaders, underclassmen, unpopular girls, girls from other schools. Hell, maybe a teacher or a girl or two from the college. The middle school? Parents or other adults? The cute girl taking your order at Starbucks?"

"How the hell would we pull that off!?"

"Like I said, Will, spitballing," she shoots back. "But, I mean, the whole school... no, the whole town is basically ours for the taking."

No rhyme or reason? A truly random assortment of people to make up your coven? It's definitely a radical idea, maybe a little too radical. But it's also an intriguing one.

You have the following choices:

*Noteb*
1. Underclassmen

*Noteb*
2. Second-tier girls

*Noteb*
3. Unpopular girls

4. Eastman

*Noteb*
5. Truly random

*Noteb* indicates the next chapter needs to be written.
