Chapter #4

Power to do Good

    by: Thepeoplearetheheroes Author IconMail Icon
What kind of power did you now wield? Power that appeared to be infinite and unlimited, as you looked at your own body and then you thought about it. Absolute power corrupts absolutely, the road to hell was paved with good intentions. What was the alternative? You had the power to choose. You could use it to bring suffering and oppression, exterminate all life, bring untold existential horror to any and all beings. You could be indifferent, leaving the world as it was while you hedonistically indulged every pleasure and fantasy of yours, ignoring everyone else as long as it didn't interfere with your selfish indulgences.

But why? You could do good, it wasn't even incompatible with having a good time.

You resolved then to go down the benevolent path, to use your power to bring good to the universe, while avoiding the bad side effects as much as possible. But then, left before you was the choice on how to do this. You though of three ideas:

The first was that you would keep your powers a secret, bestowing benevolence on those you wanted to benefit, maybe sometimes punishing those that did wrong. If bad things did happen as a side-effect you would at least avoid screwing over the entire world in the process. But this would leave so many bad things in the world unaddressed.

The second possibility was to go public, to announce your presence to the world, to improve the world with changes. Perhaps you would remove all disease from existence, eliminate pain and suffering, change the weather and climate for the better. But you would refrain from taking any role in governing those you benefited. You would be a benefactor but not a ruler. Taking requests if almost everyone agreed but otherwise keeping your hands off on the day to day running of the world.

The third possibility - and perhaps the only realistic one. What was the point of benefiting the world if your gifts might be wasted or twisted to perverse ends? If you created abundant food it would only be stolen or used as a political weapon by power hungry politicians. If you gave humans abundant and clean energy they might wipe out the remaining species left on the planet or use it to create weapons of mass destruction. Corruption and evil would still reign, unless you reigned. You could set yourself up as the supreme ruler of the world, punishing those who did evil, rewarding those who did good and guiding humanity to a new golden age under your rule.

All of these paths had their upsides and their downsides.

Time to choose you thought...
