So, in the usual canon, a coach crashes down a mountainside and Death arrives to do his duty for the people killed by it. He then finds a young baby in the carriage and feels an unusual moment of empathy. The first of many to come. He takes the girl away to his home in Death's realm (a nice little cottage where he keeps bees) and 'allows her to have lived her life' (meaning that she becomes the girl she would have been if she had lived sixteen years of life, which is to say that she is wistfully romantic but unfortunately much too plump for the role of the typical gothic romance) then stops her aging or maturing anymore for a few millenia or so, till he realises that she should go back and live a normal mortal life. So he hires an apprentice and 'arranges' things so that they fall in love and elope, becoming the ruling nobility of the country of Sto Helit. They have a daughter, Susan Sto Helit.
In the usual canon Susan then 'inherits' some of her grandfather's traits magically. She becomes very slim, unlike her mother, and her hair is black with a single, prominent white streak and it moves by itself. Her skin is pale and her face even has stripes on it (right where her mother slapped Death) that stay utterly pale even when she gets flush with anger.
