Marissa's eyes were bloodshot as she tapped away at the keyboard. There was only a few minutes left until her deadline and she only needed a few more lines of code to finish. It wasn't easy getting a computer scaled down to someone only three inches tall, but she built it herself. She needed it to complete all her odd jobs.
While she might have a tiny head, she had an incredibly vast mind. She graduated from college the year before while others her age were still attending high school. Being born small made many things a challenge, and thus created a huge strain on her family. While her mother assured her that it was no big deal, feelings of guilt were always in the back of her head.
To help make up for it, she became the major breadwinner of the household. Using her genius, she worked as a freelance coder to whatever company needed a project done. She did amazing work and did as much work as an entire team, for only the price of half. While most of her time was taken up by work, she also left time for her other job of drawing manga. It was more of a hobby, but it also gave her the financial boost to buy her family the newly remodeled kitchen.
Hitting send, Marissa finished with a sigh. Looking at the clock on the corner of the screen showed that it had just clicked to midnight.
"Another narrow save...and happy birthday to me..." Marissa said before slumping back in her chair. After only a few seconds, she passes out with the screen illuminating her face.
A bright light woke Marissa rather abruptly. Snapping her head around her room, she spotted her mother, Karen, had just entered and switched on the lights.
"Happy Birthday, sweetie! Oh my, did you fall asleep in your chair again?" she asked, concerned. Marissa grumbled under her breath as she got up, walking towards her toy house. While she got her own room, the only normal furnishings were a table that held a toy house and her work desk. Stepping inside the front door, she flicked on its own lights. The entire place was battery powered, including the coffee machine that whirred to life.
"Sweetie? Once your done getting ready, how about you meet all of us down in the living room? We have a surprise for you..." she asked.
After taking a sip of the bitter brew, she finally spoke up into her loudspeaker. "Sure thing mom, I'll be down in a minute."
"Thank you, Marissa!"
Hearing the door open and close, Marissa downed her coffee and got ready for the day. Even though it was only the morning, she was already worn out and ready for it to be over with. While the shower warmed up, she looked herself over in the mirror. She could hardly believe she was already 18...But it was showing. Her long red hair fell messily down her shoulders, showing off her petite body. Her deep blue eyes had dark rings around them. She was told that she looked a lot like her mother when she was younger...except tiny.
Once she had finished Marissa made her way downstairs. She had installed an escalator on the side of the stairs for mobility. Entering the living room, her mother and older sister, Margot, shot confetti shooters as she turned the corner.
"Happy Birthday!" they said in unison. Despite her stamina being drained, it made her happy to see smiles on their faces. After getting scooped up and placed on the table, they suddenly turned serious.
"Marissa, I know this is short notice but for your surprise we need to go for a ride in the car. You see, the surprise is...me and someone else's mother made an arrangement. She has a tiny child too...but can't afford to take care of her. Meanwhile, you've been working for years to pull your own weight around the house. But it clearly takes a toll on you. You're always stressed or tired, and I believe that you need something to pull you away from work. So today, you're going to meet your...well...your fiance..." she drifted off.
Marissa had calmly listened the entire time, but kept her head down.
"So...you're going to give me away?" she said, tears coming down her eyes. "I make you worry, so you want to marry me off to a complete stranger?!"
"NO! I'm this FOR you, not TO you! While I did make this without your permission, you don't need to go through with it. We planned the wedding for today, but you get to meet your spouse first. If you don't approve, I'll call the whole thing off!"
She started to go over everything in her head. All in all, Karen was just worried about her. Plus, what did she have to lose by marriage? It wasn't like dating was easy for someone like her. The only reasons she could think of to object was wanting to stay with her family...and it couldn't be a man. She had never come out as a lesbian, but since her mother had gone through all the hassle she should at least meet the guy.
Marissa was silent. With no response given, Karen and Margot picked her up and got in their car. Once they were halfway there, Marissa spoke up.
"Who is it?" Karen was stunned at first, but quickly recovered and smiled.
"We put the file on your phone, dear. I know you like to know everything before making a decision, so everything about her is inside the file."
"Her?"
"Yeah...you really shouldn't doubt a mother's intuition" she said with a wink. Marissa blushed, her mother knew before she could even come out of the closet.
Who is in the file?
