"Stand back in there, I'm going to open the door!" Ben Simons called as he pushed against the cool steel door. The student inside pushed back, turning the episode into a bizarre tug-of-war, only in reverse. Ben's superior leverage gave him the edge, though, and with a shove, the door burst backwards, knocking William Horner backwards into the toilet.
"Sorry, Will. What is going on? Are you alright?" Ben voiced his concern.
What Ben saw was a skinny 16-year-old kid, wearing beat up work boots, faded blue jeans (that fit - an anomaly these days), and an open flannel shirt, displaying a white undershirt with the word "Budweiser" emblazoned across it. The rolled up sleeves of his flannel shirt revealed a nasty bite wound on one his arms. From the soaked through toilet paper wrapped around it, it looked like Will had tried to bandage it, but failed miserably. Now he just looked... wrong.
As Ben took in the scene, Will continued groaning as he awkwardly lurched to his feet.
"Will. It's Mr. Simons, I'm here to help. Let's lie you down on the floor and see about a pressure dressing of some sort for your arm." More moaning as Will stood there, his eyes unseeing. "Will. Come here, please," Ben said as he gently reached for Will's good arm.
At which point, Will bared his teeth and lunged at his English teacher. Mr. Simons stumbled backwards, surprised at the turn of events. Keeping his feet, Ben managed to turn and start slowly backing out of the restroom, all the while pushing Will away with the bat and saying, "William Horner! What has gotten into you? I'm trying to help, calm down!"
Will never stopped his moaning-groaning as he kept shuffling forward and lunging jerkily for Ben. Ben kept pushing him away but was growing more and more concerned and annoyed at the whole situation. He was tempted to use the bat more offensively, or at least tackle and subdue the boy. Just not in the bathroom. No camera eye to cover his ass in a court of law.
So Ben backed himself out of the bathroom, Will following with a glazed, almost hungry, look in his eyes. Now in the hallway, Ben Simons, English teacher, had to make a choice - baseball bat, wrestle Will, or run away while calling for help.
