A whirling vortex opens in the middle of the pedestal, a sphere of violent grey-white motion, a shimmering rainbow of colours flash around the surface of the ball of wild energy. Checking the meters, you check you're not being dosed with radiation, carefully you walk around the portal. The view is the same from every angle, as you complete your circuit, stepping over the snaking cables.
Peering closer, you start to see vague shapes in the middle of the maelstrom.... Or perhaps it's beyond. Bobbing your head from side to side, you try to judge how far away the shapes are.
Caution makes you check the answer from different angles. But, by the end you are sure. You're seeing through the portal, to the other side. The shapes are indistinct, and you initially think you're just seeing the opposite wall. However, by the third and fourth look, you can see differences.
Your best guess, is it's a parallel reality, a parallel basement. The thought of meeting yourself, or some version makes you feel uneasy. Will you approve? Will they? What'll be different?
Cranking up the energy input, the noise increases a strained whine added to the experiment. You start to see the portal affecting the air, as if pulling it into a whirlpool, and drawing it in.
The sphere surges larger, it's edges just inches from touching the pylons. With a larger surface, you can see more clearly, you walk around the experiment once more... automatically stepping over the cables, your eyes fixed on the dimension beyond.
