Chapter #5

Running Away

by: yes you Author IconMail Icon
Jessica felt a sudden stab of fear as the dragon lifted its head and looked at her. She had moved closer to try to see the dragon better and it now looked as though it would be her undoing. She tensed herself as she prepared to run at the slightest sound.

'She hasn't run yet. But she's scared of me, because she is ready to run at a moment's notice,' thought the dragon.

At that moment a loud crack sounded. Jessica had been very slowly backing up and had put her foot down on a dry twig. In her state of heightened readiness the sound was more than enough to trigger her flight. She turned and ran faster than she had ever run before.

The breaking twig had caused the dragon to flinch a little, but he saw the girl turn and run as fast as her legs would carry her. He didn't want to frighten her more, so he didn't chase after her, and instead did the only thing he could think of: talked.

"Wait! Come back!" he shouted. When it became obvious that she wasn't returning, he broke down and cried. Every single person he had seen in 16 years had responded by either running or with swords, and he was just so tired of having everyone see him as a monster. If only he could find someone who actually saw through to what he really was...

He cried for almost a half an hour, then went back to his home. It was a cave not far from the stream with a large boulder blocking the entrance so that only he or a similar sized creature could move it and get in. He would have to keep a low profile for a while, for the girl would tell hunters. As he thought that he collapsed on a mat that served as his bed and cried some more. Just another day in the life of a dragon.

As Jessica ran she thought she had heard a voice. It sounded like a teenager, a boy of her age, though deeper than it should have been. "Wait! Come back!" she had heard it say, but this didn't register in her mind. Nothing registered except the buildings she was coming up on, her one hope of survival from the dragon that she was sure was chasing her. She ran straight to her house and collapsed on her bed, quivering with all the adrenaline. It was there that Glen found her, having been told by several people of the village that his sister tore through the village like she was being chased. She told him the full story, and he immediately called for a town meeting. They decided to once again send their hunters to try and track the dragon and kill it so that it would stop attempting to kill the villagers. The hunters found signs of the dragon, as they always did, but were unable to track the dragon and never once saw him watching their progress. So, just like all the other "attacks", the case was dropped and pretty much forgotten in a few weeks.

During this time, Jessica had time to think. She realized the dragon had never made a move to her, and she wondered whose voice that was that called out to her. Could it be someone who had been kidnapped by the dragon? Who was the owner of that voice that had pleaded with her not to leave? Through it all, she decided that no matter what, she could not be afraid of the forest, and that she would keep exploring it, though a little more cautiously. Who knows, she might run into the dragon again and it might not be vicious?
