An eerie, menacing silence fell over the Thousand Sunny and the shoreline it was near. The wind and waves stilled, and the gulls above, along with the beachfront wildlife, was silenced in an instant. It was so menacing, that the ship’s trademark lion figurehead lost it’s cheerful expression, replaced with a terrified look that screamed “oh dear fuck, someone’s gonna die”.
And Ussop honestly, truly felt he was going to die for what he had just done. Eyes bulging, sweat mass evacuating his entire body, snot streaming out his nose and mouth shut tight in a horrified smile, he cursed fate as he slowly turned around to face the rest of the crew….who all had shadows over their eyes, staring at him with deep, hateful frowns hiding sharp, pointy teeth that would make anyone else quake in sheer terror. That is, if the waves of Conqueror’s Haki washing over them didn’t make them collapse boneless to the ground, mouth foaming. Ironically, the only reason Ussop hadn’t done so himself was out of fear itself- fear that if he passed out now, the menacing, furious glares of his crew would be the last thing he saw.
To his credit, Royce had not done that either. Instead, he had fallen into a defensive stance and drawn a large, wide blade from a sheath on his back, and coated it and his arms in a layer of Armament Haki. His face showed his feelings, ringed eyes, sweat beading and tight lipped yet open mouth a display of ‘OH HOLY CRAP, MONSTERS!’, but instead of running like a sane person, he had chosen to try and defend himself against this meancing-
“Ussop.”
Luffy calling his name in a menacing, hateful, almost loathsome tone broke Ussop from his thoughts. Though his entire faces was shadowed by his beloved straw hat, Ussop could tell that his face was set in an expression of maximum anger- and then his captain looked directly at the sniper, revealing Ussop had been right on the Berri- his eyes, ringed with utter anger, mouth barley holding back from devolving into a snarl, and his entire face screaming that he was very, very pissed. “What do you have to say for yourself?”
At the uttering of that line, whatever fears that had been holding Ussop in place shattered, quickly replaced by primal fear and the primaler urge to run for his fucking life.
“I-I-I-I-I-I’M SOOOORRRRRYYYYYYYY!!!
So he did. Before anyone could make a move, he had leapt backwards over the side of the Sunny and fell into the water below. The minute he touched the blue seas, he broke out into a panicked backstroke and rocketed through the waters like a bullet, plowing into the shores, before leaping up and booking it into the tree line of the island just as fast, screaming all the while.
Back on the Sunny, the menacing mood suddenly died. First Robin, then the rest of the crew, seemed to instantly calm down and relax….all expect Luffy. Cautiously, Royce re-sheathed his sword, but kept his Armament Haki up. After a moment, he decided to ask a question. “Sooo….were you really going to kill him?” he inquired carefully.
Sanji responded with a chuckle, his angry glare now all but gone. “Nah, we weren’t actually gonna kill him. We don’t do that to our crewmates. Scaring the shit out of him’s a lot more-“
”I’M GONNA KILL YOU!!!
Before anyone could react, Luffy had launched himself off the Sunny, with only a gust of wind and the rocking of the boat to announce his takeoff. By the time the rest of the crew spotted him, he was already skimming the tops of the trees with Gum-Gum UFO, on the hunt for lying, fate-taunting sniper.
“Hey, wait a minute-!”
“OI, is he really-?!”
“That dumbass!”
“HE’S GONNA KILL USSOP!!!”
“I wonder how many pieces he’ll tear him to?”
“OW! This isn’t the time for such thoughts, Robin!”
“Oh lords, this is bad….!”
Of course, the crew proceeded to flip their shit when they realised Luffy wasn’t bluffing, and truly did intend to kill Ussop. At this point, Royce was faced with an important choice. He could either stay with the crew and send someone out to stop Luffy, or go out there and stop Luffy from killing Ussop himself. One had the chance of getting himself killed, but the other wouldn’t win him brownie points with the the rest of the crew. He had to make a decision…..
