This choice: Your going back to the office • Go Back...Chapter #3Naming A Successor by: Lelouch Sighing you eye the little digital clock on your car's dashboard, it said it was 3.41 P.M. In a way it was a good time to learn of your condition, almost every possible thing would be open right about now and you were still big enough that you could do those things without getting hurt of weird looks.
You could still see your fingers trembling, the news of your imminent death was just too shocking. Sure you may have been a little bitchy, hell a cut throat bitch but you didn't truly do anything to deserve such a fate as death by shrinkage. Just thinking about it brought shivers to your body, in mere days you would probably be able to be crushed beneath someone's foot, a day or two after that you would probably fight for survival from gigantic balls of lint or such, and finally at the end of the week you would either get crushed by gravity or from the weight of a single atom. Not exactly the brighest future.
But it was still early, you may have been diagnosed with more or less a death sentence but that didn't mean you just had to sit and suffer through it! Heck now you can do the things fear held you back from! Before you had any sort of adventure or pleasurable experience there was still something to be done, you would have to visit your work office.
Your time may have been short but you wouldn't just shirk off your duties, you would inform your company of your imminent fate and then name a successor to run your empire. Just leaving without saying a word is simply stupid, you worked your ass off to get the company to what it was and you'll be damned if it goes down with your death! Although it would make a lovely parting gift....
The choice was clear and you made it without hesitation, as soon as you could you would visit your business office. However the heavy traffic jam you were in came first, it'd be a miracle if you were out in a hour but chances were it would be closer to three.
The actual time was between your guesses, after about two hours traffic started to move along smoothly; which after two hours of waiting without budging an inch was like a gift from god. There was no way of telling if you had shrunken much from the wait, things seemed the same but there was no real certainty. Only way to find out was to stand up and compare yourself to someone you knew.
It seemed like only seconds passed before you arrived at the office, probably due to the waiting period you had to go through. Stepping out of your car you instinctly clicked your tongue in slight frustration, your clothes were even looser than before. The shoes you wore were probably a size too small now.
You didn't show weakness though, with a clear authoritative aura you walked into your business office. With a sudden change of the air everyone in the building turned to you, smiling nervously and offering good tidings to you. They weren't being nice, it was out of fear; the job paid well but you, their boss was very hard on them. It isn't a stretch to say that you fired people only because they annoyed you once, when you practically run the city you can get away with that.
It's been like that for ages though, at this point you ignored them all and awaited for the arrival of your assistant. Right on cue the brunnette Hannah ran around the corner towards you, wearing a clearly fake smile.
"Good morning Miss Baker!"
"It's the afternoon you idiot." You grumbled, Hannah annoyed you to no end but she had her uses; plus as an assistant she was little more than your slave. You also realized something that bothered you, Hannah was taller than you, it meant you had lost approximately a foot since this morning.
Hannah too focused on your demeanor to notice this, appeared to nearly faint, "So sorry mam! Is there anything you need."
You kept it short and sweet, "Call everyone together in the main hall, I have an announcement."
If she had any questions Hannah knew not to ask, after nervously looking you in the eye she took off back where she came from, you could hear her panicked voice screaming at everyone to get into the main hall.
In less than a minute everyone who worked for you was assembled in the main hall, you stood before the large crowd like a dictator and their army.
Not one to mess around you jumped right to the point, "I'm dying."
The reactions of the crowd varied, some laughed as if you were joking, some appeared to be thanking god, and some just seemed bewildered. You weren't sure who asked but someone raised their hand, a man and asked. " When?"
Rather rude way to ask but you elaborated, " The doctor said a week. Apparently I have some unknown disease."
"Is it contagious?" A scared worker girl asked.
Smirking you replied, "If it is I'll die happy knowing you all are burning with me."
The crowd laughed nervously, many of them showing extreme signs of anxiety. Hannah, near the front of the crowd asked another question, "What does this disease do?"
With a sigh you answered, "It sounds unreal...but it's shrinking me. Slowly I will become a foot tall, then an inch, and I'll just keep on shrinking until an atom crushes me." The crowd was silent, awestruck by your statement. It didn't matter to you in the slightest if they believed it, you just continued. "So I am naming a successor to carry on my business."
The air in the room grew heavy, every person in the room wanted this job; the power to make others miserable for a change. With authority you pointed at a brunette girl with a dark blue miniskirt and glasses, her eyes almost appeared evil, a trait you admired. "You're the only person who can keep my business empire running the way it should be, so you shall be my successor....Maria."
Maria chuckled and adjusted her glasses, "Thank you mam."
"Be sure to work them to the bone."
Maria's smile grew wider, "Trust me, the nice streak is over."
Ignoring any responses by the crowd you clapped your hands. "NOW GET BACK TO WORK!"
As quickly as it was made the crowd dispersed. Among the last to leave was Hannah, who looked heartbroken, poor naive girl seriously thought you were going to choose her. If anything you'd shrink her with you just so she can suffer too. The news seemed to have been accepted, you expected many skeptics to leap at the whole shrinking thing, but no one said a word. It was how they lasted in this job, treat your word like the word of god.
Boredly you enter your old office to gather your things. In the process of naming a successor you seemed to have also lost a few more inches, you were probably around five feet tall now. It took a while but you gather a large box full of your various belongings, heck you probably lost another few inches just doing this dull activity.
Just as you were going to carry to box out of the room a knock came from the door. You went and answered it... indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
