(Note: this takes place the year after "Deathly Hallows" but without any Ron/Hermione or Harry/Ginny)
Hermione exited the hospital wing her face as blank as a dementor, she was going to die; a small burst of anger flowed through her, after everything that she'd overcome she was going to die soon. It all started when she returned to Hogwarts for 7/8th year she noticed her magic was getting weaker, then just the other day she noticed she was getting smaller, thinking she'd been hexed by a Slytherin she headed to see Madame Pomfrey so she could fix it; she couldn't. It turned out she had contracted a rare magical disease known as 'Violet Syndrome' which drains the victim's magical core and shrinks them in completely random bursts, there was no known cure or even a way to slow either process. Hermione felt felt truly alone, her being the only one of the 'Golden Trio' to return as Harry and Ron were fast tracked into the auror program.
Hermione was brought out of her little pity party when she almost walked into headmistress Mc Gonnagal "Oh there you are Ms Granger, Poppy just called and told me about your condition, I'm so sorry" the scottish witch then pulled her favourite student to her and held her as she cried into her shoulder "Ms Granger... Hermione, given the circumstances I will need to assign someone to stay with you and keep you safe"
