Chapter #4

An expensive decision.

    by: Dxhiker Author IconMail Icon
The three young socialites, Jamie, Pam and Kim, all barged through the door in a single file line. It was still at least ten minutes before her official opening time, but Lisa welcomed them all into the salon, and decided to let them browse for awhile before revealing her newest treasure. She knew that all three, particularly Jamie, were extremely excited by the possibility of purchasing their own tiny man, so Lisa decided to savor the moment.

In the meantime, Charles was literally on the verge of a nervous breakdown. His slight claustrophobia was greatly exacerbated by his confinement, and the darkness, relentless movement and muffled voices surrounding him only added to his burgeoning lunacy. Charles’ first thought was that perhaps Lisa had actually killed him, and that he was in a coffin being transported to the cemetery. As he was able to regain some control over his thoughts and emotions, however, he realized that the fact he seemed to be fully conscious and cognizant of his surroundings shot some fairly significant holes in the whole “death” theory.

The knowledge that he was probably alive, however, did not bring about any sense of relief. He was still pinned down, hot, and struggling for breath. All he could do was wait . . .

“So how can I help you today, ladies?” Lisa inquired.

Kim spoke up first. “I think we are going to go all out today. Manicure, pedicure, facial. Is Christie coming in today? I could use a massage.”

“Everyone is scheduled to come in today. I expect the staff to be along shortly. Right now it is just the two of us.”

“Who else is here?” Pam asked.

“Just me and . . . my newest little assistant.”

At the phrase “little assistant,” all three customers immediately stopped what they were doing and stared at Lisa. After a beat, they all smiled and quickly began walking toward her.

“Are you serious?”

“Are you talking about a . . .”

“You mean you . . .”

All three began talking at once as they converged upon Lisa. They observed the huge smile on her face, and they immediately knew that the day they had been waiting for had finally arrived.

“Follow me to the back, girls,” Lisa said, leading the way back down the short hallway into a small office opposite the reduction room. Once everyone was gathered inside, she immediately fished the small blue box out of her pocket and held it up before three pairs of hungry, admiring eyes.

Jamie, Kim and Pam had heard about Lisa’s occasional forays into the sale of shrunken men, and had made known their desires to be placed upon her list, but they had never actually seen one in person. They were almost trembling in anticipation and excitement as the box was slowly lowered onto the desk.

“Before I open this box, you girls need to decide if you really want this. It’s not cheap. After all, I will probably lose you all as customers once you have your own miniature salon worker! Kate Beckinsale used to spend over a thousand dollars a month in here on pedicures alone, but since I sold her a tiny man, I haven’t seen her in over a year.”

Jamie, who was by far the most eager, nevertheless tried to suppress the excitement in her voice as she asked, “I think we can probably work something out. How much did you want for it?”

“$250,000.00,” Lisa said, without missing a beat. She typically sold her collection for more like $100,000.00, but she knew these women were extremely interested, and more importantly, had plenty of money.

Even for women as wealthy as Jamie, Kim and Pam, however, a quarter of a million dollars was a lot of money. The three huddle together for a moment and ultimately decide:

You have the following choices:

1. "We'll take it."

*Noteb*
2. "We can't afford it. You'll have to save him for the next customer."

*Noteb* indicates the next chapter needs to be written.
