Wake up to the captain

by: KP Rose Author IconMail Icon
"WAKE UP, BOY!"

You wince as the captain's voice stabs through your head. With much effort, you open your eyes and see the captain glaring at you. This is not the first thing you want to see when you wake up, but you have no choice, so you push yourself into a sitting position.

"Rogers and Clavic were killed by those monsters because of your weakness. Why they sent a boy for this job I'll never know, but there lives are still on your head. Think of that while we head to camp for your punishment.", the captain says to you, "When we reach camp, you will know what will be done."

Two of the surviving soldiers- you never bothered to learn their names- haul you up by your arms and, without looking at you, march forward. The rest of the group won't meet your eyes as they march forward out the cave. You are now the last one still in the cave and you can tell the rest of the group doesn't care if you follow or not. For a few minutes, you consider just staying until more dragons come to kill you, but your will to live is too strong. Slowly, feeling ashamed and confused, you make your way to the cave entrance.

Before you can get out of the cave, you're tackled from behind. You hear a snarl next to your right ear. You freeze as you hear a furious sound in your mind. Turning towards it, startled, you see a smaller version of the two dragons that were killed charging toward you.

With that warning, the mind rips into your own and overwhelming rage and grief pour over you. Without the dragon telling you, you know that this is only half of what it is feeling. Then you feel a hesitation. The dragon suddenly tries to pull out of your mind, but it's too late. You can tell it's trying to fight something, but to no avail.

Realizing this must be what the group was after, a large amount of grief swamps over you. Feeling you owe it an explination, even if it can't understand, you bring up your memories of being drafted, of trying to stop the captain from the slaughter, the young dragon's parents' last words. Finally you try and speak to it mentally much like it's parents did to you. "My name is Trent Godfrey."

As you recounted the memories to it, the dragon slowly began to calm down, though refused to meet your gaze. At the end, it nodded. Assuming that meant it believed you, it then began to walk toward you, finally lifting it's gaze to your eyes. Never before have you seen such an amazing shade of black. They seemed to hold vast knowledge beyond what it should have been capable of. Suddenly it flared it's small wings outward and jumped for your chest.

Shocked, you wonder what that means before a pain explodes on the back of your neck as it makes contact and for the second time, you black out.

This time, you wake up on your own and find that you are not in the cave any more, because you can see the stars. Before you can even wonder where you are, The dragonling's makes its presence known in your mind by showing you pictures of where you have been. You assumed you were close to camp by now. It seems you were right in assuming what your group was after. Though why was still a mystery.

Looking around, you find yourself inside a carriage being carried, no doubt, by the militia. Thinking of what to do next, you decide...
