"...so I wondered if maybe I could get my job back, you know, and do the whole... trying to fit in better thing," I said, trailing off as Kenny sighed. In the month since I'd last seen him, his belly had grown even bigger, testing the strength of his shirt buttons.
"I wish I could help you out, Conrad, really, but I don't have enough free shifts, you know? We just don't need anyone right now." He leaned back in hs chair and looked pensive. "Well... hang on." He leaned forward again, the chair creaking ominously, and picked up the phone and dialled. He held up one sausage-like finger for me to wait. "Hughie? Yeah, hi, it's Ken. Not too bad, yeah. Listen, I have an ex-employee of mine here looking for a job, a good kid. You got anything?" He listened to the voice on the other end for the moment and looked me up and down. "Not really, but I think he could get there. So... oh, you do? Great." He hung up, and smiled at me. "That was a friend of mine who manages a place on the other side of town. You know where Alabama Fried Turkey is?"
"Uh, yeah, I've seen it before," I said. "You mean I've got a job there?"
"If you want it," shrugged Kenny. "He'll be expecting you over there in about an hour."
I hadn't been to AFT before, but I'd seen it enough times, not far from Hesper College. When I got there, it wasn't that busy, so I walked straight up to the counter where a blond-haired guy about my age but with a HUGE gut sticking out in front of him said, "Hi there, sir, may I take you order?"
"Actually, Kenny from PolyBurger sent me. Said something about a job?" I hazarded. "My name's Conrad."
"Right on time!" said the guy cheerfully. "Hughie said we should expect you. I'm Dean. Let's get your training started." He turned and grabbed a carboard bucket and began to fill it with huge pieces of turkey. "First thing you have to do is sample everything on the menu. Enjoy!"
I took my bucket to a table by the window and started eating. There must have been a whole turkey in there, delicious and crispy and dripping with grease. As I stuffed my face, I began to feel thirsty from the spicy meat, when Dean came over and handed me a soft drinks cup as tall as my forearm. "Chocolate milkshake," he said. "We have twenty flavours of them, so you'd better get started on those too!"
"Right," I said, slightly breathless. I wasn't about to let another job where I got to eat however much I wanted slip through my fingers.
Eventually however...
