It was a beautiful day, sun splitting the skies, so I decided to go down to the lake. Summer was already half over, and I had done basically nothing with myself. I pulled on a t-shirt and shorts, my stomach having returned to its usual flatness, threw a towel into my bag and set off, pausing only to grab a couple of donuts from the kitchen which I wolfed down on the way out to my bike.
The warm air whipped against my clothes and through my hair, and I thought idly about Dmitri as I freewheeled down the hill to the lake. He was always so satisfied; that was what made him fun to be around, what drew in all the girls. Why wasn’t I more like that?
As I sped down the hill, I noticed the clothes shop where my friend Shelley worked sometimes, its door wide open in the heat. I could stop in and say hello, I thought. Right next door, however, was a new ice cream parlour. It must have just opened, because I’d never seen it before; the idea of stopping for a sundae was very tempting.
