You blink your eyes, blearily, and try to ignore the clanging that seems to be clawing at the inside of your skull, trying to get out. Your groin is throbbing and feels heavy against your inner thigh. The acrid stinging smell of smoke fills your nostrils as you wonder if your roommate was smoking in your dorm room again.
But this doesn't smell like tobacco smoke.
The clanging, you realize, is coming into your head via your ears; the headache is just a side-pain.
Realizing that something is very, very wrong, you sit bolt-upright in a too-firm bed, tossing a flimsy white sheet to the floor and toppling over an IV stand attached to your furry, right arm.
Fur.
You stare.
Furry ... right ... arm...
Your body is covered in fur.
You're in a strange room, like a hospital room, and clanging bells are going off while smoke seeps in from under the door. The fluorescent lights flicker overhead and you can hear shouts and cries of alarm coming from elsewhere in the building.
Fur.
You can't help but stare. Even the throbbing pain in your arm from where the needle was pulled free doesn't bother you half as much as the image staring back at you from the mirror at the foot of your bed.
