Figuring the prisoner must have watched you pocket the key, you nod slightly, eyes straight ahead.
Out of the corner of your mouth, you mutter, "Do you know what it's for?"
The other prisoner, a man in his late 40s, leans close to you and whispers, "We're in the holding cells of an old jail outside of town. The government stopped using it a long time ago because it's such a horrible place -- they used to torture people here back in the '50s! I toured this place once, and there aren't many locked doors, except for the ones that lead to the outside."
The guard turns around and stares at the two of you. Did he overhear the whispered conversation? It appears not, he's turning back around, reading a 1970s Playboy at his desk.
"So anyway," the man continues, "if we can get out of this cell, that key in your pocket might lead to a door that gets us the hell out of here!"
