Holding tightly to the railings at the top of the steps, Catalina could just make out the words being spat from the pirate crew. She was surprised to learn that they had no interest in robbing their cargo, which was actually nothing more than food and supplies for the British army that had recently been evacuated from the American Colonies. She had only ever known of pirates thieving from merchant ships and couldn’t fathom what other possible reasons they would have for their boarding. With her head through the banister she could just make out the voices of the trespassing pirates.
“You have two options. One, you join our crew and become a pirate, or we send you down to the locker. What’ll be?”
Catalina was puzzled by this demand. Judging by the number of pirates currently aboard her ship, she wouldn’t have expected them to be short of hands, especially as there were bound to be more still lurking on the vessel alongside them. Casting a glance over the rail confirmed that there were indeed a handful of men still aboard the offensive ship.
A sudden scuffle below on the main deck reminded Catalina of the present situation. Much to her dismay, some of her crew had refused to become part of such a crew and had been thrown overboard. Those left on deck became much more nervous and she could see that a few of them had been press-ganged already. Once the crew had realised that the threats were real, more agreed to the pirate’s demands and were escorted onto the corrupt ship. The last pirates who left lit torches and threw them towards the remaining crew members, of which there were not many but did include both the Captain and Thomas in their group.
