Sitting at the computer today, I decided to try my hand at writing short-short stories about my family and friends. Some of them will be hilarious, while others may be sad or even just facts about life. Either way, I hope that whoever chooses to read them will get a glimpse into my world and my family and friends.
My first short Story -- Georga Scheve Baugham
Three years ago, we buried one of my best friends, my partner in crime, and yes, one of the few people that welcomed my family and me to the great City of Mount Rainier, MD.
You had to know Georgia Scheve Baugham to love her like I learned to love her. She was a fiery redhead who loved with all of her heart. She was a caring mother with five young children that she was raising. She was a neighbor. She was an activist, and she was no stranger to hard times or life's disappointments. She was FUN!
Georgia died much too soon, and I miss her and think about her often. So, this morning as I mourn the loss of my friend again, I want her children to remember that night that all of us crowded into my Scooby-Doo Van and went to the Hyattsville Drive-In for a night at the movies.
It was not the movie that made the night memorable. It was how we got into the movie that was the highlight of the evening. We were broke -- normal for two single-heads of households back then -- but we wanted an outing with the children, and the drive-in was our best bet.
I had enough money for me and mine, but Georgia was short. So, I decided that there was no way they would charge a blind woman for going to the drive-in to be with her family and friends. So, I decided that Georgia had to be blind for the evening so that we could all go to the drive-in movie! Now, THAT was funny. Georgia was the funniest blind woman on earth. The attendant could not decide whether to charge us or not. We were at the pay booth, it seemed for hours, but eventually, the attendant let us in. WHAT A HOOT we had AFTER, we were finally admitted.
Even years later, we remembered that night with lots of affection, and everyone that was there, including the children, tells the story differently, but we all still get a big laugh out of it.
Georgia Scheve (I never called her anything else), rest in peace, and know that as long as I have breath, I will always remember you and call you MY FRIEND. I love you, Georgia Scheve!
