Happiness. Hap•pi•ness. [hap-ee-nis] What does It mean to be happy? What does happy even mean? There are many synonyms for happiness, pleasure, joy, exhilaration, bliss, contentedness, delight, enjoyment, satisfaction and those are just a few from dictionary.com. But what does it mean in the real world? I believe that being happy or being in a state of bliss is all related to how you feel on the inside. Not in your kidneys or in your lower intestent , rather in your soul. Some may even say you can feel joy in your heart. The big question still remains, what makes you happy? Is it stuff? Is it clothes and shoes and cars? Or is it less materialistic, such as people, moments, animals or relationships? I say it is a combination of both mostly including the less tangible items. Being truly happy is to truly be satisfied with who you are and what you have. There has been many times when celebrities have come out to say that they are depressed, some have even committed suicide. We often then wonder how they could have been so un happy? They have everything do they not; money, fame, cars, houses? Perhaps that is all the evidence we need that money does not buy happiness. It may buy moments of pleasure, however pleasure never lasts. Even the best tasting cake runs out or rots. Accepting who you are and what you look like, in my opinion, is the first step to being happy. Once you understand that this is what you look like and what you are going to look like for many years to come until you start aging, you can cross that off your list of insecurities. The people who matter do not care if you have crooked teeth or crooked legs, they value your friendship and how you treat them. Letting go of what you do not like to see in the mirror will lead to you being more comfortable in your own skin which in turn will make the moments with your true friends more enjoyable and memorable. When I think about my life I realize that I do not have much but yet I could not be happier. The people that I surround myself with are people who look past what I have on and look into who I really am. They do not worry about what new shoes I am wearing as much as they worry about where I go wearing them. |
