Aye, as the others say, everyone has flaws and everyone has fears, so a realistic character must have both.
The flaws and fears of my characters differ, but I sure do find it easier to write about them when I have some experience in what they feel like. For example, one of my characters in the current class is shy and socially awkward and I have a lot of experience with that. He's in a tricky situation, though, being a world champion in a sport that attracts a lot of media attention. There are cameras everywhere. So, it's a case of imagining the impact of such an environment.
