The big problem I had when I tried playing was the actual character writing. Way too quippy and quirky in a way you see from a lot of modern stuff, trying too hard to be cute in a way that completely undermines the tone and seriousness. Maybe BG1 and 2 are similar (I've never played them), I don't know, and nerd stuff is always going to have some quippiness in it. But I can play something like New Vegas and I never feel like it undercuts the seriousness to get a funny or memeable line in except in cases where that's very much the intention (like playing a low INT character or taking the Wacky Wasteland perk).
Even something like Old World Blues, which is a lot wackier, has an underlying sadness and horror to it in that all of the zaniness is there to reinforce how disconnected from reality and humanity the Think Tank is.
