Maybe for the sake of the assignment, decide that this person can't read well and this one can't write well (or whatever) and make a decision and write it, whether it's where the story should be going or not. It might surprise you and give you ideas as you write it! There's nothing like writing something you aren't sure about to get your brain to tell you, "No! This is really what I want..." And then you know. It's like asking someone if you should wear your green dress or blue dress. They say the green dress, and you either agree with them, or you realize you really prefer the blue one.
Try to make some choices and write them down. Character 1 is like this. Character 2 is like this. Then begin the scene and see what happens?
