To be honest, I'm not a dedicated reader. My influence is more videogames, movies and TV series, and comic books and whatnot. There's a lot of stories I should read - both classical fantasy novels and science fiction novels, and also Latin American and Spanish literature to those ends. (For one; I had a book, printed by the state, that had both the Old Spanish and modern Spanish translations of "The Song of Mio Cid", which showed the huge change between the language from that period to now. I also got the Spanish version of "The Ingenious Hidalgo Don Quixote of La Mancha", which I only read at points, but never expanded upon. Blame it on a change on my Spanish teacher, since Don Quixote is compulsory reading where I live.) However, there's a book I read from cover to cover only once, and I loved it: the trilogy of books that comprises Elizabeth Moon's The Deed of Paksenarrion. I began reading it as soon as I bought it, but only one chapter a day, and then came hurricane Maria, which meant no light for months. That made me read it a lot further, and the way Paks changes from a sheepfarmer's daughter to a noble hero is extraordinary. For someone that enjoys playing D&D and watching fantasy, it's almost a crime that this book hasn't been given a live-action adaptation; the attention to detail in terms of training, character development and story development are amazing. I'm long due for another read, and I'd love to show it to my niece (except the procedure of tinisi turin and a specific part on the first book are way too crude for someone her age). And I'm also due to read other stories in that world, specifically the one detailing the story of Paks' commanding officer, Kieri Phelan. |
