Thank you to CJ Reddick for his assistance with this prompt. -| The Prompt |- The group of applicants met at the gates to Clockwork Manor. They eyed each other suspiciously, wondering what motivations lay hidden beneath the surface. One brave soul stepped forward and pushed the gates open. An alarm sounded and his head was separated from his body before he even had time to hear it. The others stared morbidly; they had expected something like this. One by one, they carefully picked their way around the dead man and through the gates. The walk to the front door was as perilous as described. Another five lost their lives to various traps. The survivors left the bodies; it would be enough trouble as it was to save the living, much less the dead. But, after a seventh life was expended to open the front door, the diminished group found themselves in a foyer. Each stepped carefully, and looked into the corridors extending from their current location. There was one to the north, the east, and the south. But which way to go? "Ahem." There was a sudden clearing of the throat. The rescuers looked up, startled. "Hello. My sensors and alarm bells tell me that some, though most definitely not all of you, have made it past the front door traps. Congratulations, Fortuna appears to be on your side. At least, for now. "You will also be pleased to discover that, upon reaching this foyer, you have finished with the random and unpredictable traps. I know now what is exactly ahead of you, and you have three options. "You must get to the second floor, and to the attic trapdoor, which is directly above the foyer. Unfortunately for us all, the only stairs to the second floor are at the end of each of the wings you now see before you. You will have to traverse down one of them and survive the traps, or solve the puzzles, or both. "In the north corridor, you will find several timed traps which can only be undone by solving the puzzle which the trap presents you with. In the south, you will find what a child may call an obstacle course, however rather than falling into water or mud if you fail, you will die. And, in the east corridor, you will find challenges that test both mind and body. "I imagine each of you have different talents, which shall dictate your choice. No way is quicker than the other, nor is any more safe than the other. I have no further advice for you, and I don't believe this communication system will hold out. I must bid you farewell for now. Godspeed, and I hope to see you soon." The six looked to each other, and then as each headed towards a corridor they found themselves sorted into pairs, one for each of the three available directions. It was a certainty that not all six would make it to the second floor. -| Information |- Your character must make it to the second floor alive. Whether your partner's character survives or not, and how well the two work together, is up to you. The traps are limited only to your imagination. You may choose what corridor you go down, and it needn't be the same one your partner chooses to write. There may be further communications, but you will not enter the attic at this point, that's for another round. You should submit a story (up to 3,000 words but there is no minimum word count). Your story must include both your character(s) and the character(s) of your partner in some way, but does not need to include all the characters from all the auditions, only those of the person you are paired with. Your story must explain how your character(s) achieve the task they have been given (making it to the second floor alive). The task must be completed within the story you submit. You will receive another part of the prompt each round. The deadline for round one entries is 11:59pm WDC time, July 15. -| The Pairings |- Paul D with Mani Onassis Vixey Todd with Rebecca Edwina Flint Schnujo's NOT Doing NaNoWriMo with Maddie somehowe with Victor MacLaren BD Mitchell with Ben Bradley Cerbios with Captain Lewis Haven Only one writer from each pairing will go through to round two. |
