T3 - Final - Freeing Gulon
-| The Prompt |-

The Elven King eyed the two contenders standing before him. "You two have shown great bravery and skill in the challenge so far. We greatly appreciate all you have done to get us this far." The king sighed, the dark circled under his eyes making him appear much older than the last time he'd appeared before the contenders. "We have the key and the dragon-wolf... Now we must free Gulon."

Eldon and Braedanne nodded, waiting patiently for their instructions.

"We have managed to locate the warhammer. It lies in a fallow field, a day's ride north of the Dark Lake. My people report that the field is deceptive, and dark magic protects against intruders. You will each be given a map of the precise location, and you will be required to take the key and your dragon-wolf with you. We will provide what protection we can along the journey. A young sorceress is waiting a safe distance from the warhammer and will help guide you in unlocking the spell and freeing Gulon."

Eldon raised his hand. "And how will it be determined who wins the Elixir?"

The Elven King nodded solemnly. "The journey is not the difficult part. The real test will be surviving the magic tricks and traps that await you on the field. You will need to think quick and be smart. The first person to successfully reach the warhammer will win the Elixir, regardless of who is carrying the key. Remember that this is not just a challenge for a prize, you are fighting to save our world. Regardless of who reaches the warhammer first, I only hope that you both survive, and can assure you that although the Elixir will only go to one of you, you both have my personal gratitude, and that of this kingdom too."

After a pause to ensure there were no further questions, the king stepped back and gestured to some elves who were standing nearby with maps and supplies. The challenge was on.

-| Information |-

Please take your key (literal or otherwise) and your dragon-wolf (from the previous rounds) with you.

It is expected that both competitors will arrive at (or nearly) the same time, but will have different strengths and weaknesses that will come into play when handling whatever booby traps the magic in the field surrounding the warhammer throws at you both. It is permissible to approach from different directions and encounter different traps, or you may both battle the same traps, up to you. The elves will assist with guidance regarding unlocking the spell, but not with traversing the field itself.

There is only one key, shared between you. It will take the form of whatever you gave it in the previous round. If the key is being held by the loser, they will be required to surrender it to the winner (if they survive).

Your story should end with you unlocking the spell and freeing Gulon who will then go on to bring the light back to the kingdom.

You should submit a story (up to 5,000 words but there is no minimum word count). Your story must include both your character and the character of your partner in some way. Your story must explain how your character achieves the task they have been given (crossing the booby trapped field and reaching the warhammer). The task must be completed within the story you submit.

The deadline for final entries is 11:59pm WDC time, November 15
