I was looking at word count options here on WDC, and noticed a couple of odd things. For one thing, the estimated word count in highlighted and grid-searched items is... way off. This isn't really a bug, because it seems to be the way it is coded, probably because it's less information to fetch every time.



Being off by 1500 words on an 8,000-word item is pretty crazy. It probably doesn't get used much, but I thought I would mention it, and see if the other existing word count tool could be used for that in some way.

On the topic of that other tool, it looks like only the item owner themselves can access the word count for an item. I see contests everywhere that request word count be posted at the top of the item. Wouldn't it make more sense to just populate that into the information for each item, visible to all? It seems like it could easily be fit into the existing information:



Or maybe even given a place of honor, because let's face it, writers are accustomed to word counts, not judging a story's length by size in kb.
