I have read around this topic and as I understand it, it is theoretically possible (although this is questionable) but practically impossible.

Firstly it requires negative energy which, while not disproved, the likelihood of it existing is vanishingly small.

Secondly the power required to warp space time would be more than our sun produces in its lifetime.

Thirdly, the contraction would gather all sorts of debris which would probably destroy the ship and the destination planet.

Finally, it would be impossible to stop as there would be know way to transmit the requirement to undo or alter the 'warp' at faster than the speed of light.
