Re: Advice on networking
by A Non-Existent User
This is something that I've been curious about, as well!

The newsletter for Authors has actually covered this today *Smile* There's different ways to get involved on social networking sites, such as Facebook and Twitter, though I haven't had much luck with them(a few likes, no shares...). The blogging sounds promising, though.

The problem with networking as an unpublished author is that no one's ever heard of you or, more importantly, your writing. Usually it takes a novel or a couple of short stories before you really get some base readership and then people will check up on you and see what you're doing, especially if you're writing a series.

Personally, I'm going to try and enter a few contests that have an actual payout, such as L Ron Hubbard's contest and a few others for short stories.

For novels, I'd recommend NaNoWriMo(the sponsors are usually publishing companies and they'll take your work fairly seriously if you win) or Amazon's Novel Challenge which offers a publishing deal. There's also self-publishing which will at least get your name out there and hopefully, make you a bit of money at the same time.

I'm not sure if this was what you were looking for, but it's the best thing I've found so far. Hopefully, someone more knowledgeable can help us both *Smile*
