An odd dilemma. I don't think I would mind if Damons were humanoid. However, it does depend more on the tone of the novel then anything else. How do the Damons feel towards other races? Do they want to separate themselves off with their own identity and culture? Or are they trying to join and meld with other groups? In the first case, they would most likely create new masculine and feminine nouns for their race. If the second case, then they would likely use the standard man, woman.

Another consideration is language. Do they have a native language different than the common tongue? If so, common words like man and woman would probably carry over into new languages, even if they adopted common later. The words would just become part of a regional or racial dialect.
