You are on the right track, in that the best way to get started writing is to just sit down and write, as you have stated. And it's okay to just write at first, get your ideas out there on paper (or the computer screen), and not be concerned with spelling or grammar at first.
That said, once you've finished writing something, I find it helpful to go back and edit for spelling and grammar errors, because it makes it easier for others to read and comment upon my work, and allows for clearer communication of my ideas. Most word processing programs can help do that. Just a thought - you, of course, can take it or leave it!
