Howdy! I'd never heard of the term Mary Sue before.
A "Mary Sue" character isn't necessarily a bad thing... The problem is that you can't pull an interesting main character out of a stereotype unless you're doing parody or some such.
But if you deviate slightly from the stereotype, you may be able to pull something from the character. Perhaps make the horrible tragedy from her past as an event that is only horrible to her; others find it trivial...
In other words, just jag a little over to one side on some of her characteristics and see what happens...
I dunno... just a thought..
