I, too, agree that saying 'never' is usually a bad idea, but I'd challenge you, or anyone, to come up with a single example of deus ex machina that was used effectively and didn't make the intended audience groan and roll their eyes or throw the book across the room? Even the ancient Greek audiences thought it was a cop out.
The best modern example of deus ex machina that I can come up with is from the made-for-TV movie V.
