Try it this way. Actually, a stomped foot is a literal representation of anger because it's something I, or my characters, do because we are angry. It's the same as hitting someone. It doesn't represent my anger; it's an action I take because I am angry. It's cause and effect, not symbolic.
As a side note, I'm curious; how do you know that it isn't you who are projecting your beliefs on their works?
Because I'm right and they're wrong. ;)
