A sanctuary for weary writers, inky wretches, and aspiring professional novelists. |
Hmmm... looking over this list, I realize some of these aren't "skills." Most of what is "talent" can be developed, more or less - but it doesn't hurt to have some native inclination. Curiosity and willingness to do research. A tendency to observe the world and people around you. A good imagination. The ability to visualize and describe a scene from your imagination. The discipline to apply butt to chair and write, even when imagination's tired and doesn't want to play. The wisdom to eat right, sleep right, and not overindulge in mind-altering substances. (We really ought to train like athletes, but far too few of us do.) A healthy ego - not an overinflated one, but not one that even sees praise as twisted criticism, either. The ability to type fairly quickly and accurately. Neat handwriting. Good grasp of spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Fearlessness in playing with language, but the good sense to know when you've gone too far. Interest in/exposure to other languages. A knack for living life and accumulating experiences to draw from. A broad emotional range and a flair for the dramatic (on occasion - but only when it serves you well).
