I grew up in America but moved to England and spent the 'high school' years there - in other words, I have a very "foreign" view of America. I was forced to move back to America for university, and the moment I stepped out of the plane and saw American flags everywhere, I knew I was going to be really fed up with exactly what you describe.
I overheard a conversation between two people the other day who were discussing how other countries hate America, and saying it's just because they're jealous, etc. I kept my mouth shut, which was very difficult, but I was thinking, no... it's because America is arrogant, materialistic, close-minded, regressive, aggressive, hypocritical and self-righteous. And yet somehow, despite all these horrible traits, Americans manage to believe their country is the best thing since sliced bread and the beginning of the universe.
