The second of my collections of poems written for "Express It In Eight."
As usual these days, I choose blog format because it offers more space for the work.

World Maker

In another world
I was a cartographer
with mountains and bays
at my fingertips.

Historian too
climatologist
I told the stories
and set the weather.

Food for Thought

If a poem has to rhyme
then everything is mime
and words are meaningless
just nonsense we address

never minding that they chime
they’re still not worth a dime
and cannot be so pretty
as a little rhyming ditty.

Originality

It may have been done
but that’s no reason
not to do it again
whatever the season.

If you want to be first
then first you must
get up pretty early
and leave others the dust.

LIfe Lessons

Life lessons in the classroom of experience
that rigid master of the developing soul
scratching the squeaking words on the dusty chalkboard
and our suffering in rapt silence at learning’s knee.

This was the teacher of old school unbroken
no empty vessel of propaganda barely from her teens
this was the strict icon of discipline and power
to inflict pain and reason on inattentive minds.

A growth of moss extends a tiny hand...

Mossman

Mossman creeping across the bark
down low amongst the humus soil
a creature of the damp and dark
in secret growth his soul doth coil

But now in species friendship true
a gesture brave and quite unique
extends he once a tiny hand to you
and you into his world do peek.

Footprints

Footprints in the mind of memory
places we once knew
signs and rhymes of other times
ages we pass through.

Gone from daily hue and cry
deeds of former days
in silent moments now they rise
unbidden from the haze.

Quill 2024 Nominee

Moonshine

Always the bridesmaid and never the bride,
here in the darkness forever I ride,
while there in the black skies she revels in blue,
my face turned to hers to honour her due.

So rarely my chance for sweet recompense,
I’ll not say revenge, but it’s pleasure intense
to swing through her sky and stand in the way,
now shadowed her light and darkened her day.

Oops 4

I always say, “Oops”
when life hands me scoops
of poops in our groups
and snoops on our stoeps.

When a thing falls from hands
and butter down, lands,
it’s a way we can stand
and pretend life is grand.

Star Dust

Star dust
drifts through the emptiness
of space
seeking a suitable shelf
to settle
and collect with time
and so to build
a galaxy.

Unroll the Revolution

Kudos to the one who found it,
that gossamer film so thin
it sticks to all around it,
even itself, another skin
that floats away, then holds on tight,
surrounds and springs its trap;
oh, we all know well the fight
we’ve had with mighty Saran wrap.
