Breanda is a small, but curious fairy that sets off to find out about the night fairies.
Breanda Dawndew yawned and sat up on the big, green leaf that she had rested on overnight. She looked up at the bright, yellow sun, and seeing the sun high in the bright, blue sky splashed with wispy, white clouds as soft as cotton, she knew that she had slept late again. The warm sun had already dried the early morning dew that used to lie in the crisp, green grass. Breanda or Bre for short took a deep breath in and smelled the fresh grass below. She felt the sun upon her tiny, bare arms and realized that today would be another warm day. Bre looked out at the wide meadow before her. Tall, green grass stood high, begging the sun to shine upon them. The colorful flowers shone in the sun, showing off their vibrant colors, and fresh spring fragrance. A slight warm breeze could be heard racing through the tall grass and flowers, daring someone to stop it. Bre’s curls gently flew about her face as she closed her eyes, breathing in the fragrance of the flowers, grass, and a bit of sunshine. Bre smiled, regretting sleeping in on such a perfect spring day. Bre stood up and brushed the extra fairy dust off her pale pink rose dress. She stood up lightly, and stretched out her pink butterfly shaped wings, beating them feebly in the air. Bre then began to beat her wings hard, and in an instant, she was up in the air. She soared higher and faster as she enjoyed the cool wind that whipped across her small face. The grass and flowers were just a blur of color as she flew above them. Bre spun in the air gracefully, a soft glow of golden fairy dust traveling gently behind her. She spotted the flowers she was looking for and begun her graceful dive into the soft lavender flowers below. They were fully bloomed, and their fresh fragrance surrounded Bre as they swayed softly in the breeze. Bre flew through their soft petals and gently landed on the soft dirt below her. She dug her tiny toes into the dirt, and smiled. It was much cooler under the protective petals; away from the sun’s hot glare. “You’re here!” she suddenly heard. Bre spun around, looking up towards the voice. She saw her friend Alarissa Fernspray hanging, upside- down, from the soft purple lavender flowers above. Her long brown hair danced with the breeze as Alarissa swung back and forth. She blended so perfectly with the flowers that Bre had almost missed her friend. Alarissa’s purple skirt matched the flower, making her almost invisible.
“Yes, I am here,” Bre said smiling, “Why don’t you come down here so I don’t have to twist my neck to see you?” Alarissa giggled as she grabbed onto the rough, dark green leaf next to her, and after swinging herself back and forth like she was on a rope, she fluttered her soft, butterfly wings and gently floated down to her friend below.
Alarissa fluttered her wings, suddenly annoyed, and crossed her tiny arms. “What took you so long?”
Bre bit her lower lip, blushing, and played with her soft curls. “I slept in, sorry.” Bre blushed redder and looked at her friend shyly.
Alarissa’s annoyed expression softened and she smiled warmly at Bre. “Of course you did,” she said as she sat cross legged in mid air, fluttering her small wings gently. “You always sleep in silly fairy. Always up with the night fairies late into the night when you should be fast asleep like the rest of the day fairies. It is your nature as a day fairy to sleep when the sun goes down. I cannot see how you are able to ignore your instinct every night.” Bre shrugged her shoulders and thought. She didn’t know why she was able to stay up with the night fairies until the early morning. Alarissa was right. It was not in her nature as a flower fairy of the day to stay up past sundown for the night fairies parties. But she did. And she had fun. She wished that all of her friends in the day would be able to stay up as she did, especially Alarissa. She was Bre’s best fairy friend in the meadow and she wished she could share this special time with her friend.
Every night, right as the sun was beginning to set, and the world was beginning to grow dark, the night fairies would come out, ready to play. Fairies would make honey cakes as sweet as candy, and fresh fruit would be served as crisp as a cold winter’s night. The water fairies would fly across the warm grass, and glowing a soft blue and purple glow that shone in the darkness, they would use their magic and spread dew across the ground to cool it. The light fairies would come away from their warm beds ready to bring light to the growing darkness. They would spread light throughout the land, putting stars in the sky and light in the flowers in every color imaginable, so the tiny fairies could see. While these fairies bustled about, making preparations, the rest of the fairies would show their talents. Wearing their best clothes of flowers and leaves, and glowing as bright as they can, the beautiful fairies would dance in the air. The light fairies would light the sky by flying in patterns, leaving purple and blue fairy dust sparkling in the sky. They would make pictures of birds and children, and would make swirls and sparkles in the air, showing off each unique talent. The mushroom fairies would make beautiful, glowing mushrooms in the soft grass beneath, that lit up the grass in a luminous, white circle of perfection. They were big and soft cushions for the fairies to sit on, and a warm umbrella to keep them shaded from the soft rain that sometimes fell. Once, a few summers back, a child fairy figured out that if he jumped on the mushroom beneath him, he would be propelled forward with a burst of speed. After he found this out, word spread throughout the land to the other fairy children. Ever since then, the fairy children of the night would bounce upon the mushrooms. Soft glows of yellows, blues, and greens, shone beneath them as they landed upon the soft mushrooms. Sparkling in the night, the fairy children would giggle and laugh, smiling the whole night long.
Bre remembered the longing she felt as she watched the night fairies jumping on the mushrooms. They looked like they were having fun. She remembered looking upon her pale pink rose petal dress and comparing it to the dark clothes of the night fairies and thinking to herself, “I look so different. They would never like me because of how different I am.” She knew that playing with the night fairies wouldn’t be right. She was a day fairy. She would feel out of place and weird. She didn’t know how to put stars in the sky. She couldn’t make mushrooms. She could make a rose, which was her special talent, but there was no need for roses to be put among the many luminous mushrooms before her. She was also afraid of the night fairies crushing her beautiful flowers as they jumped around. She knew she could never fit in.
Fairies of both the day and the night didn’t mean to leave each other out of things. It was just the way of the world. The night fairies were always fast asleep while the day fairies flitted about, busy, and then at night, it was the day fairies turn to fall asleep as the night fairies became busy.
“What are you thinking about Bre?”
Bre blinked back into focus and lost her daydream of the past night.
Smiling, Bre looked at her friend, still sitting cross-legged in the air. “Nothing, just daydreaming.”
Alarissa looked at her friend quizzically. “About what?”
“I was just thinking about the night fairies.” Bre replied with a faraway look on her face. “Why can’t we all be together? It seems like our worlds are two different worlds. We are all so different which isn’t a bad thing. We could learn from them.”
Alarissa sighed and looked at Bre with a worried look on her face. She knew that once Bre got her mind on something, an idea would take flight and she wouldn’t give up. “They are different than we are Bre. And that’s how it’s supposed to be. We aren’t supposed to be together. We are the flower fairies of the day and they are the fairies of the night. We don’t need to learn from them,” Alarissa looked at Bre, hoping her friend would just drop the subject. “Let’s just stop talking about them and we can go play down at the waterfall. Please Bre?”
Bre thought for a moment, crossing her arms, and Alarissa knew she had lost. “I think we should figure out why we don’t talk to the night fairies, don’t you? Aren’t you curious?”
Alarissa shook her head and frowned, “No, not really.”
“Well I am and I want to find out why.”
With a flutter of her wings Bre was off in the air, with Alarissa sighing and flying slowly behind her.
