In Dreams
When, in my darkened room
my body, appearing lifeless enough
(except for the rhythmic rise and fall
like waves upon the blankets)
is no longer consulted, nor is it necessary
for me to travel in the world of dreams
Where the limits are only those
which my cautious mind feels it must impose
There, I may visit with loved ones
lost to the harsh glare of wakefulness
And, my mind, being employed to create
a novel landscape, and alternate lives
suddenly births the answer to the
pain that stalks the spirit and the desperation
of the fragile human existence
It strikes my core and spreads through my being
like ripples on a lake being struck by raindrops
For a few brief seconds there are tears
of relief and a satisfaction of knowing my purpose
Only for it to be lost again in the steps to the bedroom door
and retreat forever into the hours of darkness.
