Memorial Day Weekend: Scattered Memories
Saturday, May 26, 2018
"Barbecue may not be the road to world peace, but it's a start."
Anthony Bourdain
The "Blogging Circle of Friends " prompt for DAY 2018:
Write about a Barbeque or Barbecue. Both spellings are used, so use the one you like best. Write a story, memory, or poem. If you have a recipe you can share use that.
Scattered Memories
Memories of Memorial Day weekends
are variegated,
scattered
across the decades of my childhood,
young adulthood,
and maturity.
They are videos
playing through my mind,
generating
both smiles and tears.
In my younger years,
Grandpa drove us
through parts of southern Kansas,
northern Oklahoma,
and western Missouri
to place
crape paper flowers
on the graves of family veterans.
As he grew older,
the Memorial Day weekend drives
became shorter,
and we went to The Lake--
our name for the recreational area--
where my grandparents had
a mobile home
on a rented lot.
At The Lake
we barbequed,
fished,
and remembered
those who had passed on.
