Chapter 6
Janet stared straight ahead.
The nurse kept rubbing her palms together nervously.
They reached the cafeteria.
There were balloons hung everywhere.
A beautiful cake was decorated and set in the middle of the room on a table
next to the record player. The record player was spitting out old rock and roll tunes
that Janet recognized right away.
Janet hummed along with the tune.
The nurse just stared at her.
Across the room stood Janet's mother and father.
Janet stopped.
The nurse rubbed her palms together.
Janet looked at the nurse.
She glanced at her nervous palms.
"Are YOU ready was the question?
"I'm ready."
They proceeded on.
Janet recognized some of the people at the party. The nurses were there and some of the
patients from the hospital were present.
'Too bad Billy couldn't be here' she thought sadly as she walked up to her parents.
"Oh my God, Janet it so nice to see you!" Her mother said hugging her tightly.
"Yes, it's so nice you guys could finally make it all the way up here. I know it's such a long
drive. Your schedules must be so busy not to be able to find time to visit your crazy daughter
in the insane asylum."
Janet sneered.
Her mother ignored the remark. It was so much like her, Janet thought.
Janet spied her father talking to the nurse.
Tears welled up in her mother's eyes.
"Charlie, your daughter is waiting to say hello. Please come over here and give her a hug."
She practically begged her dad to interrupt them.
"Hi Daddy," Janet hugged him. "How are you doing these days? You look great! These eight months
I haven't seen you haven't aged you a bit! Everything going okay?"
"Yeah...yeah...everything seems to be fine, Janet. How are things going with you?"
"Oh, I'm doing well, Daddy. I'm sure that the nurse informed you that one of her patients and one
of my friends got killed last night. His name was Billy and we were pretty close. He was like one
of the closest people I've had in my life since I've been here. Someone killed him with a kitchen
knife. Now before you all go thinking some super bad thoughts about your crazy daughter it wasn't
me.
Now let's have cake!"
They just stood there in shock looking at each other as if they'd seen a ghost or something.
Janet walked over to the cake.
It read, 'Happy Birthday Janet, we love you!'
"Oh..now..isn't that nice," Janet said sarcastically. "You love me. YOU love me? Is that why I
haven't seen anyone for eight months is BECAUSE YOU LOVE ME!?!"
Janet picked up the kitchen knife.
She slid a paper plate next to her and cut herself a piece of cake.
"I know it used to be a tradition that no one could take a bite of their cake until the birthday
girl took the first bite. So, I'm taking the first bite!"
She put the first bite into her mouth.
"That is delicious!" she said, "My compliments to the chef! Come on everyone! Come on over and get
a piece. I'll cut you some."
Janet picked up the kitchen knife again.
Her eyes glanced across the cafeteria floor.
The whole room went silent.
The only sound was the turning of the record that indicated that it was at it's end.
Around and around it spun.
Janet stared at the pair of high heels that stared back at her.
The yellow pair of high heels.
There was only one person in the world this could be.
Janet looked up only to become face to face with Bonnie.
"Hello, Janet. So nice to see you! Look I brought you a present! Happy birthday!"
Janet's knuckles turned white around the knife.
A bright sun of light beamed through the window of the cafeteria almost blinding Janet.
She put her hands over her eyes to protect herself.
"Come on Janet!" A voice boomed loudly through the cafeteria. "You know you want to! Don't you
remember how much you hate her?"
Janet turned around.
The whole party was frozen.
Frozen like a bunch of mannequins.
Janet stared at Bonnie who was still holding out her gift for Janet to take.
The knife tightly gripped in Janet's fingers Janet lunged towards Bonnie.
