Fishing in the Bay Actually we as a family enjoyed fishing a lot although we had few opportunities where we lived. A rare opportunity knocked at our door when my husband was posted as a chief engineer on a dredger off the coast of the Bay of Bengal. Children and I joined him on one of his assignments during the summer holidays of that year. The dredger had some repairing problems after a trip into the sea. So we had to call at the nearest port for getting maintenance jobs done. After a day or two, after a busy day attending to various chores around the engine room, my husband was free in the evening. We decided to go onto the jetty and indulge in some fishing. The most popular fish in these parts is salmon, which we all loved. Kids were excited about the sport. We borrowed the fishing gear from the offshore offices and armed with it went into the sea along the wooden wharf. We fixed the line and the sinker with the bait that comes along with the kit. Standing on the edge, we could see some shadowy movement of fish beneath us. It was unforgettable; that evening with the long shadows slanting on the wooden floor of the wharf. The sun was just setting in a burst of orange, yellow and gray. The sky looked like an artist’s canvas. It was a picture perfect cameo that greeted my eyes. Fishing in the inky waters with the setting sun gleaming on the surface, thrilled my inner self. I could hear the distinct lapping of water against the wooden ridges. I enjoyed the natural beauty sitting on the edge with my feet dangling, My son who was holding the line shouted. “ A fish dad, mom!” I ran to him and helped retrieving the fish into the net. There was a medium sized salmon. We took the hook off and got it into the fish net on the floor. My husband too was successful Now to cleaning and cooking...yummy...that sounded enticing! |
