Letter from the editor

Sometimes a person is in need of inspiration. Life sometimes takes over in such a drastic way that you are stressing to get everything done in time. Not to mention the fact that people around you are distracting you from reaching your goal: writing. I just had a period like this - the kids were more at home than at school and a lack of inspiration was bugging me. We were lucky that we had the chance to go away for a few days, to relax a bit. It was cold though... and we realised that spending time with each other was a good thing.

@->--@->--@->--@->--

Swimming was too cold though so I have been working on a drawing or two. My father asked me to draw a certain flower that was blooming there... it worked out well. Then my mother came with a question... when I want to start drawing, which pencil do I have to use? I pointed her out which one I usually start with, and which I use to make accents to the illustration. She decided to try and I noticed that her right hand was completely cramped.

This is called by psoriasis... I don't think I have to tell you what this disease does. My mother isn't able to sign properly anymore with her right hand... but I knew that she used to be left handed. I wrote down some writing exercises, that are also used in drawing. Now she has to exercise every day with her left hand to be able to write again. She felt like a child, going back to school again... She felt like a newbie whom discovered how to write again...

Still, the reason why I write this, is one of gratitude I guess. We are able to write stories or poems. We are able to share them with friends and family. Some of us even manage to get published. We are blessed, compared to my mother, who loses the function of her hand, and already lost the function of her right leg. And that makes me think about me being moderator here on the site. I started as a newbie once, now I am able to teach other people new things, or let them discover things again. Still, moderators are just humans. They also make faillures in what they do, while they are not perfect. No matter what... we are blessed that we are able to write!

Great advice on correcting spelling and grammar Bianca. This is so important. If an author takes the time to proof their work, it's so much more enjoyable to the reader.

Thank you Diane. I hope many people are going to follow this advice. *Smile*

Dear folks,Is a newbie a person who has only been on this site 90 days or less? I joined in Jan 2004,but due to personal problems (a cracked radiator & rising heating cost)We were offline from Feb till last week of April.Last week I broke my ankle in two places, walking our 90 LB dog Sundance. It's been a hell of a year so far!I did sell my second freelance article & getting back to writing again.The point here is am I newbie or not-please let me know. Thanks for your time--(Diane)Dee

Good question Dee. Officially the date when you created your account on Writing.com is the factor on which people determine if you are a newbie or not. I.e. hosts of reviewing forums can set a limit to new members who can let their works be reviewed. I know some of these forums set a limit of 60 days and less as being a newbie.

Technically though, in your case, you are a newbie due to the fact that you have been offline for a while and started writing after the bad period in your life. In your case you have the possibility to let your work review by posting a message in "Writing.Com General Discussion"  Open in new Window. by Writing.Com Support Author Icon Other methods is, when you read and review other people's works, to post a link to an item that you would like to see reviewed in the comment. People usually take the courtesy to pay a return visit, so to speak... And there is always a possibility to ask opinions from people you know on the site.
