Hi,  As The new year comes to a close, the weather changes, the moods of those around you change, and without you being aware of it, you change also. Maybe you are writing more, reading more, perhaps less. But the one constant in your life is Writing.com. Here you will find friends, inspiration, contests, challenges, and a ever changing, ever improving amount of tools that you can use to improve your written word. But most of all Writing.com makes writing fun. Visit often, write often, challenge yourself to improve. I myself have been absent off and on since my surgery, and following my recovery, I had three beautiful grand-daughters born. Every day I missed logging on, I missed a day with my friends.  Every day I had a tough day I missed logging on and sharing some piece of work. Now that things are settling back down, I feel like I am home after a long long journey. Welcome Newbies, and hello again my old friends.I am a research nut, loving nothing more than to learn, so I found these interesting exercises on the net. So you are ready to write!!! How to start, what to plan, what is the plot? These and many more problems can be worked out with this simple exercise. Begin like this: 1.Mood: happy, sad, angry, revengeful, lonely .... 2. A Protagonist: main character; the being who is feeling your chosen mood - the man, woman or child; earthling or alien; could even be an animal, or a mechanical object such as a car . . . 3. A Verb: decide on a verb of movement. How is your protagonist moving? Walking, running, gliding, sailing, galloping ... 4. An Adverb: to describe 'how' the character is doing whatever he's doing, e.g. walking 'slowly'; riding 'uncomfortably'; waltzing 'energetically' ... 5. An Era: a time in which to set your piece - past, present or future. 6. A setting: the place where your story starts. Could be a forest, a town, a distant planet, a beach, a farm, a railway station. You choose. 7. An Object: anything at all - a ball, a firework, a flower .... 8. An Adjective: to describe the object - a 'red' ball; a 'dud' firework; a 'fading' flower. 9. A Name: your protagonist. Finally, use these elements to construct a sentence, beginning 'As'. For example, I came up with 1) gleeful, 2) female, 3) running, 4) quickly, 5) yesterday, 6) The supermarket, 7) hands, 8) alive. 9) Mary This sentence would read: As female Mary ran quickly through the supermarket, the sight of the gleeful hands made her feel alive.. Not the best beginning in the world, but fun and insightful. Try it, see what happens, but have fun. Also remember to enter the next contest: "Invalid Item"  It is for you Newbies.
