2 - Wildfire
"Hello Martin."

Don't make eye contact. Don't make eye contact. He kept his eyes on the mirror, watching his daughter finish her practice. "Hello Ruby."

"Anna is doing great. I wanted to talk to you about giving her a top role. I wasn't sure how you'd feel about it since it's Nutcracker. I'd need her here, every day." Ruby's voice got quiet at the end.

"I'd have her here every day." He rolled back in his wheelchair and stared at his feet. "I won't let her down."

Ruby's feet came into view. "How are you doing?"

"Same old, Ruby. Just a guy raising his daughter. Nothing new nowadays."

She patted his shoulder and the voice in his head screamed. No! Don't touch!

"We'd love to have you two over for dinner sometime soon. Ben misses hanging out with you."

"Yeah, we'll do that sometime." He knows he won't. Since the accident, he just stays home and cares for Anna. The accident killed his wife and crippled him. Anna wasn't in the car, thank God. Anna was all he had left.

Ruby was Genevive's best friend. Too many memories. Too much pain.

He turned and rolled into the studio, stopping to watch Anna dance across the floor.

"Daddy!" She stepped toward him and pirouetted. He smiled as she took his hand and danced all around his chair. "Dance with me, Daddy!"

"You look so beautiful, baby girl." His heart swelled with love. He wished he could get up and dance with her. She looked just like her mother when she danced. Such willowy little arms and legs.

"Maybe, someday you'll get up and dance with me, Daddy." She ducked under his arm and twirled.

"Maybe." He knew the truth. He wouldn't.
