In the open

When the lights went out
and a hush fell on the world,
the night opened its arms
to shelter the needy, the lonely.

up into empty bellies, slipped into a stupor,

just as a tortoise draws its limbs in,
detaching from action or emotion.

while I'd laugh in my sleeve.
