Even the lowliest of life's great mysteries was not beyond his gaze. While others spoke of the croaking frog, he gave us the splash. Thus are dead metaphors given new life. What is a cherry blossom? To Americans it's a messy tree we tolerate because of its beautiful Spring blooms (if we stop to notice) and of course, it gives us cherries! The younger urban population may even think of cherry blossoms as being silk or plastic, of cherries as red round fruit that magically grow in the supermarket aisle. Yet, even today, the Japanese need only whisper the word sakura and a million petals begin to swirl in the breeze. What neglected weed grows in your garden today? Will you honor it with a poem? lllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll Weather where I am: 66º and warming up! Weather in Kyoto, Japan: 50º and nice. Not much to report today! Eggs for breakfast was a treat. Washing out underwear and putting it in the dryer and then putting it on was the highlight of the morning! And you think my life is interesting? Okay, it's not always so boring ... and boring is better than hysteria and melodrama. On the way up the hill, I noticed purple tulips, scarlet tulips, the abandoned tennis court and grass. So what did you see? QUOTABLES "You have 100 crayola choices, so you only eat the black ones?" Jeanine Cardine "This is our World. Can we walk on it?" Owen's suggestion for a placard for the Earth Day Parade. "If there is anything less likely I would use on my lips than KY jelly, it's someone else's KY jelly." Joel in reference to chapped lips and no available lip gloss. Sketched yesterday: Verses of the peony Go plant a ginkgo at my head, a peony at my feet. Remembered for a hundred years, then forgotten bones and meat. Except in verse that I now write, a rhythm for your heart that vibrates through the universe, their energy never lost. Tranformed into magnetic bits, the glue that surely binds: a proton of me reverbs in you, electrons from you in mine. All writ upon an unkempt stone snug by a stump of tree; and blooming by my dusty feet, one last pink peony. [163.38] Reviewable/ratable as "Verses of the peony" [E]. |
